During the Thanksgiving holiday I went out of town to visit family, so we had to close the office. The Monday that I got back was interesting. It had only been a week but several, of my patients reported that some of their pain had returned. Honestly, I wasn’t very surprised since those particular patients had pretty severe conditions and had only recently begun care. After the adjustment they felt better again, but it got me thinking.
Many people go to the chiropractor and as soon as their pain gets better they stop their care. In my office we don’t treat people this way. Instead, we take the time to make corrections. My patients were all feeling better – but what if they had thought that chiropractic care was no longer needed just because they felt good for a short period of time? When the pain started returning, they might have thought that chiropractic didn’t work for them and turned to other solutions such as drugs, or perhaps dangerous spinal surgeries.
Over my 27 years of practice, I have told many patients that back pain is often more than just a little problem that requires a quick fix. It is usually the result of long standing issues that have gone untreated, sometimes for years. It takes time to correct these types of issues and truly get better.
Thank goodness this vacation was just a small break. All of my patients are continuing with their treatment programs and I expect that they will do well. I think they know that we are working to help them make a change in their health.
