Free Chair Massage and Chiropractic Adjustments during “Operation School Supplies 2014″

The Back Care Center is once again proud to help Grant Elementary School in the “Operation School Supplies” supply drive from September 15th through the end of the month. And once again, we’re asking for your help to make this as big of a success as last year’s program.

Come in and get a complimentary 10-minute chair massage and free chiropractic adjustment (normally $60-$80) in exchange for donating some much-needed school supplies, or a backpack, to “Operation School Supplies.”

Like Last Year, Helping Is Easy:

  1. Call the office at 201-387-7463 to schedule your check-up and adjustment.
  2. Shop for some school supplies (ones that are needed: rulers, colored pencils, calculators, backpacks).
  3. Bring in your school supplies to The Back Care Center and get your free chair massage and adjustment.

Another Way You Can Help

You can help us collect over 100 items this year by telling just one of your friends or co-workers. If they donate some school supplies, they’ll get a consultation and evaluation, followed by a report AND an adjustment (normally $335) …all complimentary. Just tell them to call the office at 201-387-7463 to schedule an appointment and mention “Operation School Supplies.”

Thank you for helping us help Grant Elementary School and our school kids.

Yours in Health,

Dr. David Schwartz, D.C.

3 Travel Tips for Less Back and Neck Pain

Photo showing couple packing small suitcases to avoid back pain on summer trips

A lot of people are going on vacation in these latter weeks of summer. Getting away from it all is great, but if you have a back problem you’re taking your pain along with you on the trip.

So here are a few ideas to help avoid ruining your summer vacation.

TIP 1
First, start with the packing. You are better off packing 2-3 smaller bags than 1 larger bag. Even the smaller ones can be tough, so if you have to lift them, make certain to get some help. Smaller overnight suitcases with wheels are the best. They are the easiest to move and put the least strain on your body.

TIP 2
Second, pack things that can help you manage any small episodes of back and neck pain, especially if you’re spending time in uncomfortable car seats, or even more cramped airplane and train seats. Ice packs are a necessary travel companion. I am not personally a fan of over the counter pain medication, but some people find that they can be helpful and use them to temporarily manage pain.

TIP 3
Third, and maybe most important, if you have a spinal problem and you are already under the care of a chiropractor, make sure that you get adjusted before you leave on your trip. It may not be enough to fix your problem, but it might be just enough to keep your pain manageable while you are gone. If you are away and need to see someone right away, find a chiropractor near you and have them give me a call… if you’re a patient of The Back Care Center, that is! I will tell them about your condition and how to help you. It is not uncommon at vacation spots for chiropractors to see a patient once or twice until they can get back home to their regular doctor.

Meanwhile all of us at The Back Care Center are wishing you a great rest of the summer! We hope it is happy, safe and pain-free.

Drinking and Drugs Are Not The Best Way To Treat Back Pain

Photo of man using drugs and alcohol to hide his back pain.

A new patient came in from Bergenfield last month. He told me that he has so much neck pain and back pain that he needs to use some very strong medications just to get through work. I asked him if had to use them every day and he told me no. He knew how bad the medications were for him and he was concerned about becoming dependent on them. So on the weekends he drinks instead of taking the drugs.

I have to admit, this was the first time a patient told me they get drunk to deal with back or neck pain. However, after thinking about it, I realized what he was doing wasn’t that uncommon. Lots of people drink to forget about emotional pain. Drinking to deal with physical pain probably isn’t all that different.

We put him on a program of chiropractic adjustments and he has reported relief of his back pain and improvement of his neck pain by about 75%. He is exercising as well and is happy to report that he no longer takes medication or drinks to deal with his pain.

If you know someone who is going to extreme measures to cover up their back pain or neck pain, please let them know they can get help. Before the drugs (and alcohol) start adding to their problems, send them to our Dumont office. Call us today at 201-387-7463.

It’s Earache Season, And Antibiotics May Not Be The Best Choice

photo of little girl with an earache that can be treated without antibiotics at The Back Care Center

Every year around this time, parents tell me about their children who are suffering with earaches and swimmer’s ear. It is pretty understandable because, as the weather turns warmer, kids spend more time in pools and lakes with their heads underwater and ear problems are common.

Sometimes the outside of the ear might even turn a bit red, but the most common symptom is moderate to severe pain in and around the ear. Parents will quickly bring their child to the pediatrician, where the diagnosis is usually “ear infection” and the treatment is typically antibiotics.

Within two to three days the pain is gone and everyone figures that the treatment was a success. The sad truth is that kids who use antibiotics for this type of problem are more likely to develop ear infections again in the future. Which means they are constantly on and off of antibiotics.

For kids, chiropractic care is usually great at eliminating chronic earaches or swimmer’s ear. The adjustments are quick, safe and most importantly very effective. For this problem we usually focus on the upper back and neck. Those areas are closely involved in helping the Eustachian tubes to open, allowing better drainage of the inner ear.

One of the most dramatic cases was actually my own daughter. When she was about 5 or 6 years old, she came home from camp one day with a terrible earache. Her ear was bright red. When I got home from the office she was crying from the pain. I lay her down and started working on her, and in the middle of the adjustment she actually stopped crying and fell asleep. She woke up one time in the middle of the night and I adjusted her once more. By the next morning she had no pain, her ear wasn’t red and she said she felt fine. She is almost 12 and has only had one other episode of ear pain since then.

If your child is suffering from earaches or swimmer’s ear, make certain to have them checked out right away. Give us a call at 201-387-7463

Headaches are trending at The Back Care Center. So is headache relief.

It always seems that problems come into the office in groups. For a while, a lot of people will call asking for help with lower back pain. Then it will switch to something like neck pain. Lately, it has been headaches. In the past month, we have had at least ten new patients all asking for relief from headache pain.

They all had different types; migraine, sinus headaches, tension headaches, even headaches due to whiplash injuries. The only thing that they had in common was that the pain was making them miserable and having terrible effects on their lives. One woman was in so much pain that even after seeing several doctors, having a full battery of tests including an MRI of her brain and finding nothing wrong, she was still convinced that she must have brain tumor. (By the way, she didn’t have a tumor and is doing fine.)

One particular man from Tenafly came in because his wife, who has been a patient of mine, insisted he get checked. After years of watching him suffer from frequent migraines, she couldn’t stand seeing him in pain any longer. He had been getting headaches since he was a kid but in recent years the frequency and severity had grown worse. Now he often missed work, or had to leave early because of the pain. When he was at home, it wasn’t uncommon to find him laying, eyes closed, in a darkened room with an icepack on his forehead. Every aspect of his life was being ruined.

It has only been a month since starting care, but in that time he has only had one headache and it wasn’t a migraine. After a couple of weeks, he still had a little bit of tension in the base of his neck, so I sent him to our massage therapist which made him feel even better. Now when he comes in, there is a smile on his face and he is happy to come to Dumont for his headache care.

If you or someone you know is suffering from headaches, don’t let them continue in pain. We provide headache relief for patients from Dumont and the surrounding area. Call us today at 201-387-7463

Doctor Can’t Heal Thyself!

With all the activities I enjoy doing, it really isn’t a surprise that I have had more than a few injuries. Most recently it was from a fall while rollerblading. I got hit from behind, went flying into the air and landed hard on my back. My neck hurt right away from the impact, but when the back of my head hit the handle bar of the bike that knocked me over, it was like adding “insult to injury.” That night I used a lot of ice on my neck but by next day I was still in pain and turning my head left or right just made it worse.

Luckily, I was able to get to my chiropractor. (Yes, chiropractors see other chiropractors!) He took a look and told me I had suffered a pretty bad whiplash injury. He adjusted me, and then a little later I got some work done on me by the massage therapist in the office. I figured things would be better in the morning. The next day however, I was still in pain and that was when the panicked voice in my head started screaming, “Oh god, what is wrong? Is this going to get better?”

I went directly back to my chiropractor who, thankfully, spoke to me like he would any other patient. “David” he said, “you are hurt and it is going to take time for you to get better. But, you are going to get better, just give it some time.” I knew he was right and managed to calm down.

So now, I am seeing my chiropractor three times a week. My neck is getting better and I am being patient. Certain things still hurt and I have to remember to avoid twisting my head too fast. Injuries like this take time to get better and chiropractic care is the perfect way to help with the recovery.
