Hip pain? Yes, but where does it really hurt?

Photo of wallet in back pocket,w hich could be causing hip pain in some patients.A patient came to me with hip pain recently. It isn’t such an unusual symptom and we can generally give our patients excellent pain release. The funny thing is that so many people point to different parts of their body and call it hip pain. Some people touch the side of their leg and complain while others will point to right in the middle of their buttock. Some patients will even indicate their complaint being on the side of their lower back and still call it hip pain.

Fortunately, we have been very successful treating “hip pain” in all of those areas of the body. For some patients, it is just a matter of working out a tight muscle that is causing the pain. For others, it can require more in the way of spinal adjustments to reduce the inflammation and irritation to the spinal nerves.

One patient from Cresskill, the next town over from Dumont where The Back Center is located, came in complaining of hip pain. At first we were able to give him some great relief. However, even after a month of treatment, his pain kept coming back almost every day. I was totally mystified by his results until he came in one day wearing a pair of jeans with the worn outline of his wallet in his back pocket.

I asked him about it and he told me that he usually carries his wallet back there but leaves it in the car when he comes into the office. He showed me the wallet and it turned out to be about 2 inches thick. We had him stop carrying it back there and he immediately began holding his adjustments and the pain gradually went away.

The moral of the story? If you are suffering from hip pain, of ANY type, give us a call today and let us help.

It’s Earache Season, And Antibiotics May Not Be The Best Choice

photo of little girl with an earache that can be treated without antibiotics at The Back Care Center

Every year around this time, parents tell me about their children who are suffering with earaches and swimmer’s ear. It is pretty understandable because, as the weather turns warmer, kids spend more time in pools and lakes with their heads underwater and ear problems are common.

Sometimes the outside of the ear might even turn a bit red, but the most common symptom is moderate to severe pain in and around the ear. Parents will quickly bring their child to the pediatrician, where the diagnosis is usually “ear infection” and the treatment is typically antibiotics.

Within two to three days the pain is gone and everyone figures that the treatment was a success. The sad truth is that kids who use antibiotics for this type of problem are more likely to develop ear infections again in the future. Which means they are constantly on and off of antibiotics.

For kids, chiropractic care is usually great at eliminating chronic earaches or swimmer’s ear. The adjustments are quick, safe and most importantly very effective. For this problem we usually focus on the upper back and neck. Those areas are closely involved in helping the Eustachian tubes to open, allowing better drainage of the inner ear.

One of the most dramatic cases was actually my own daughter. When she was about 5 or 6 years old, she came home from camp one day with a terrible earache. Her ear was bright red. When I got home from the office she was crying from the pain. I lay her down and started working on her, and in the middle of the adjustment she actually stopped crying and fell asleep. She woke up one time in the middle of the night and I adjusted her once more. By the next morning she had no pain, her ear wasn’t red and she said she felt fine. She is almost 12 and has only had one other episode of ear pain since then.

If your child is suffering from earaches or swimmer’s ear, make certain to have them checked out right away. Give us a call at 201-387-7463

Headaches are trending at The Back Care Center. So is headache relief.

It always seems that problems come into the office in groups. For a while, a lot of people will call asking for help with lower back pain. Then it will switch to something like neck pain. Lately, it has been headaches. In the past month, we have had at least ten new patients all asking for relief from headache pain.

They all had different types; migraine, sinus headaches, tension headaches, even headaches due to whiplash injuries. The only thing that they had in common was that the pain was making them miserable and having terrible effects on their lives. One woman was in so much pain that even after seeing several doctors, having a full battery of tests including an MRI of her brain and finding nothing wrong, she was still convinced that she must have brain tumor. (By the way, she didn’t have a tumor and is doing fine.)

One particular man from Tenafly came in because his wife, who has been a patient of mine, insisted he get checked. After years of watching him suffer from frequent migraines, she couldn’t stand seeing him in pain any longer. He had been getting headaches since he was a kid but in recent years the frequency and severity had grown worse. Now he often missed work, or had to leave early because of the pain. When he was at home, it wasn’t uncommon to find him laying, eyes closed, in a darkened room with an icepack on his forehead. Every aspect of his life was being ruined.

It has only been a month since starting care, but in that time he has only had one headache and it wasn’t a migraine. After a couple of weeks, he still had a little bit of tension in the base of his neck, so I sent him to our massage therapist which made him feel even better. Now when he comes in, there is a smile on his face and he is happy to come to Dumont for his headache care.

If you or someone you know is suffering from headaches, don’t let them continue in pain. We provide headache relief for patients from Dumont and the surrounding area. Call us today at 201-387-7463

Frequent Headaches Are Not Normal – Chiropractic Can Help!

Image of woman with frequent headache that could be treated with chiropractic adjustments

I have written about this before but as a result of some recent experiences, I thought it would be worth revisiting the topic. Headaches are one of the most common reasons for visits to the medical doctor. Millions of dollars are spent on medication for them every year. They are also one of the reasons that many people seek help in a chiropractic office.

The pain from headaches can be severe, but most are not due to a disease like a tumor or high blood pressure. Instead they are typically from physical, chemical or emotional stresses. The medical approach is usually some type of drug to mask the symptoms without ever considering why the problem is occurring.

Recently I had two new patients come in seeking help with headaches. One of them started care, was seeing improvement but also saw a neurologist who told them they should discontinue chiropractic care, take more medication and try exercising. (The patient also had a lower back problem that we were working on which made exercise very difficult.) He didn’t care that the patient was seeing improvement and sadly convinced them not to continue doing what was already helping.

Another patient, also with chronic headaches, had a similar experience. Her pain was so bad that it affected her home life and work. After two adjustments her headaches were almost totally gone. Her primary physician also saw her. He told her that there was nothing wrong. Fortunately, she realized that having almost daily headaches was not normal. She continued with care and is working to correct the cause of her headaches.

I have had hundreds of patients come to the office for relief of their headache pain. Our approach is to examine them, determine the cause and see if it can be helped with a combination of life style changes, nutritional support and chiropractic adjustments. Based upon the relief our patients report, I can tell you, we are very successful with our tactic.

Frequent headaches are not normal. Controlling them with medication doesn’t help you to fix the problem and the side effects can be horrible. Instead of covering up the symptoms with medication every day, find out what is causing the problem. Give us a call so we can help.

Stay in the Race – How Chiropractic Adjustments Can Help

Stay in the race with Chiropractic adjustments like my patients did at the Spartan Race shown here

Last weekend there was a “Spartan Race” in Killington, Vermont. For those who are not familiar with this type of race, there are obstacles along the way like walls to get over, fire to jump, water to cross, hills to climb and things to carry. This particular race is hardest of all the Spartan events, was about 15 miles long and is called “The Beast”.

These races have become very popular and I know lots of people who are doing them, including many of my patients. Two of them came to me last week. Less than a week before the race something happened to them. One had severe lower back pain and the other had middle back and shoulder pain. Both of them were very concerned because they felt the pain was so bad that they might not be able to do the race.

Luckily, I was able to get them moving and out of pain with a couple of chiropractic adjustments and they both finished in good form. I was so excited when I learned of their results. They had trained very hard for the race and being able to help them get out there and reach their goal is one reason I love being a chiropractor.

Helping athletes is fun, and over the years I have helped people with injuries from activities like bike riding to golfing to football. But for me, helping ANYONE get back to doing something they love and want to do is thrilling. Things like, gardening, taking care of a family, cooking and working are just as important as finishing a race or winning the next football game.

Chiropractic care really is for everyone and is frequently exactly what is needed to help people get over the hills and hurdles that life can throw at us. If you or someone you know needs some help getting back to something they love, give us a call at 201-387-7463 at the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ so we can help them too.

Do You Have Goals for Your Health?

couple on bicycles living healthy lifestyle

Last week I was doing a re-evaluation on a patient. She had been doing very well, her pain was gone and I was focused on moving her to the next stage of her care. We were sitting and speaking but after a very short time, it became apparent that she didn’t really have any health goals and just figured if “she wasn’t sick or in pain, that should be good enough.”

Her revelation was shocking to me. We all have health-related challenges. I just assumed that everyone sees the benefits of overcoming those issues and works towards that goal. When I suggested that she should take more control of her health and set some health related goals, she looked at me as if I was speaking another language. “Why would I need to have health goals?” she asked.

I had a personal realization after speaking with her. My attitude about health is so different than most because it comes from my perspective after 26 years taking care of people. I have seen the emotional, physical and financial costs of neglecting your health. There have been so many patients who have come to me over the years and lots of them ONLY came in when they were sick or in pain. Those same people almost always come back to me in the future with the same problems or something closely related.

Things like arthritis, back pain, neck pain, herniated or bulging discs all become much more severe if all you treat is the pain. Regular chiropractic care is critical to minimizing future damage. Also, taking long-term action on your own by eating right, exercising and sleeping enough makes huge a difference.

My suggestion for everyone is to have goals for your health. Plan what you are going to do every week and do your best to stick to the plan. Remember the benefits from this approach are less pain, fewer injuries and more time to live the life you want.

If you need help setting your own personal health goals, please give us a call.

How Diet Contributes to Arthritis Pain

How Diet Contributes to Arthritis, from The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJThere are many different types of arthritis but most of us don’t care if it is degenerative or autoimmune arthritis. It’s the pain and stiffness that gets our attention. As the condition goes on, joints become swollen and inflamed and any type of movement or activity can become difficult

Medical treatment has been the same for years. Treat the swollen joints with drugs like steroids or “NSAIDs” and hope for the best. The problem is that nobody tries to find out why the problem has happened and, over time, the effects of those drugs can make the problems worse.

So why do your joints get swollen? One reason is that many people have hypersensitive immune systems. Your own defense system is so revved up that the slightest irritation triggers a very strong reaction. Since about 95% of your immune system is in your gut, your diet is an important key to controlling the problem.

Eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables will nourish your body and improve healing. However, eating the wrong foods like wheat, processed sugar and dairy can irritate your immune system causing inflammation and lead to joint and muscle pain. You don’t even have to be suffering with belly problems for it to happen.

In our office we correct mechanical problems of the spine by using chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises. Fixing the mechanical cause of irritation helps to get rid of your pain and restore your health. But looking at what foods (and sometimes drugs) patients are putting into their body is an important part of treatment and is why our arthritis patients get great results.

If you are having problems with arthritis and want help, call The Back Care Center today.

Your Spine Is Not Static

Spine and back pain at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJNothing about your health stays the same. It is in a constant state of flux, improving or degrading, depending upon both internal and external factors. This continuous change can be frustrating for people. So many times I have been asked by both patients and friends, “Why is my back hurting again? I thought we fixed it!”

The big answer is that nature doesn’t allow anything to stay static. Everything is constantly in motion. The world around you and the one inside you are always changing. On a personal level, if those changes are positive, they will create an improved state of health. That means less pain and illness. But if they are destructive changes it can lead to illness, pain and breakdowns in your ability have the type of life you want.

To those of you who have done something for your spine but it doesn’t seem to be enough, I would encourage you to be patient. Keep doing the things which lead to better health and you will see the results.

To those of you who have worked on your health before, seen positive changes but then stopped doing what was working (exercise, regular chiropractic adjustments, changes in your diet), don’t be surprised. The work needed for being healthy doesn’t stop when you feel good. It goes on for a lifetime.

If you would like to know how we can help you keep your health keep moving in a positive direction, please give us a call here at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ.
