I don’t work for insurance companies.

People come to “The Back Care Center” with many different types of problems. We do a thorough examination before deciding if we can help with their case. Prior to starting any type of treatment, I sit down with the patient, discuss everything that was found and do my best to answer any questions they may have. One of their most common issues is about the patient’s health care coverage. That’s when I have to explain that I work for them, not the insurance company.

For my entire career, my goals for my patients have always been the same. When someone comes to the office, I want to get them better and back to doing what matters to them the most. Patients have a goal as well. They want to feel better, they want to avoid having to take pain medication daily and more than anything, they want to get back to their lives.

Insurance companies have an ambition as well. They want to make as much money as they can. Yup, that’s it! They have boards of directors, CFO’s, CEO’s as well as thousands of employees. They all have an obligation to their stockholders to make as large a profit as possible without breaking any laws. (Although, they obviously have no issue with bending them a bit!)

Health insurance problems are a fact of life. We work with all companies as well as Medicare to make certain that every patient gets as much money as possible from their policy towards their case. While we work very hard to make certain that care is ALWAYS affordable, each policy is different in its coverage. So, we base every patient’s treatment plan on their needs and not the limitations of their insurance policy.

As a chiropractor, working for the insurance company would be a nightmare since we simply don’t share common objectives. Instead, I will continue to work for my patients so together they can reach their goals and I can reach mine.

Doctor Recommended?

These days television is filled with commercials for drugs of all types. Very often they are described as “Doctor Recommended.” It is a powerful phrase that slides by fast in the commercial, but have you ever stopped to wonder why doctors are recommending these particular drugs?

Most physicians go into health care with a deep desire to help people live healthier and happier lives. Medications are one of the primary tools they use. However, the doctors don’t develop these tools and usually it is a representative from a pharmaceutical company that really suggests which medications should be used for a particular condition.

It is still the doctor who prescribes the medication and it doesn’t sound very good on television to say “Drug Company Recommended.” After all, how many of us truly trust “Big Pharma?” So I expect that we will continue to see more advertisements implying that prescribing these drugs was a doctor’s idea.

So the next time you see a commercial with a kind and wise doctor telling you which medication he recommends for all of his patients, remember who is really giving you that advice.

My Happy Place

Photo of a happy, healthy couple holding hands, from The Back Care Center of Dumont NJ

I am generally an upbeat person but not all days are as good as others. Sometimes stress really gets to me and the whole world looks a little bit less exciting. There is no question that this feeling is common and everyone goes through the same thing. I am not going to pretend to have any special wisdom about how to handle those times, but want to share an experience that got me through a particularly difficult day.

Sometime about a week ago, the weather had warmed up enough for people to begin to enjoy being outside. I was in Dumont driving towards my office and happened to see a patient of mine walking hand-in-hand with his wife. They apparently were on the way to pick up their child from school. They were both laughing and from the expression on his face, he was loving life at that moment.

Just about a month earlier this same man had come into my office with his wife. He had been suffering with severe pain in his lower back which went down his leg and was affecting his life in every way. He couldn’t play with his kids, driving or walking was difficult and he told me he was “living on Advil.” Both he and his wife were very concerned about his future and how this pain would continue to affect him.

A few days prior to that day he had come in for his adjustment and his pain was almost totally gone. When I saw him on the street, I got a glimpse of just how much his life had changed by getting rid of his pain.

The next time he came in I thanked him, because seeing him made me happy and helped turn a difficult day into a wonderful one!

If you or someone you know is suffering with back pain tell them to call the office today. Let me help them to find their “Happy Place.”

Pain Can Steal Your Life

Photo of woman at work suffering from neck pain, which can be treated by Chiropractor Dr. David Schwartz at The Back Care Center of Dumont NJ.

Some people just don’t realize how pain affects their life. I had a new patient from Closter last week with this problem, but her story is so common that we can all learn something from it.

She came in after work, complaining of neck pain going into her head. The pain was frequent but she said it doesn’t get in the way of getting things done.

While I was taking her history she repeated at least 5 times that “it really is not so bad.” However, some days she took as many as 8 Advil/day to manage the pain. She also told me that when she gets a headache at work, sometimes she has to go into a darkened room for up to 1/2 hour and her co-workers have to cover for her absence. At home her husband and kids know when she is in pain and have learned to stay away. It is also not unusual when out with friends to go home early because of a sudden episode of pain.

After we finished the consultation, I read back everything to her. She was stunned by it all and began to cry. “I didn’t realize how bad it really has been. I just try to keep on going.”

We did an exam and took some x-rays. I believe that with some time, she will do well. What was amazing was her surprise at the effect the problem had on her life. She was so focused on being productive that she didn’t see how much had already been lost.

Honestly, her story wasn’t that unusual. People lose little bits of their life to pain without noticing. Finally when the loss becomes too much to handle, they seek help. If you are just getting through the day like so many others than don’t wait until you lose more of your life. Call us at 201-387-7463 today for an appointment.

Everyone Has a Weak Point

Montage of a collection of x-rays showing that everybody has weak spots.

When I was a child, I was asthmatic and used to get frequent attacks where I could barely breath. It affected me in so many ways including my endurance and strength. Exerting myself in the cold weather almost always resulted in fits of wheezing and coughing. As I have gotten older the attacks have become less frequent but to this date, whenever I get sick, it seems to always hit my weak point, my lungs, and I end up with bronchitis.

Everyone has a weak point. Often it is in their back, neck or shoulders. People with these problems will tell me that all has been going well but recently things have been “stressful” and now they are having pain again.

Your weak point becomes a chronic issue, and whenever the stresses of your life are too much to handle it will act up. The cause can be emotional stress, but it can also be physical or chemical pressures as well. So things like troubles at home or at work can cause you to have pain, but overworking and eating or drinking the wrong things can also create the same types of problems.

Chiropractic care is very helpful when dealing with those weaknesses. Adjustments address the areas that are bothering you and help those chronic problem areas get out of pain faster and more safely without resorting medications that just hide the symptoms.

If someone you know is suffering with chronic problems, they may have a weakness that needs some help. Tell them to give us a call right away.

Hip pain? Yes, but where does it really hurt?

Photo of wallet in back pocket,w hich could be causing hip pain in some patients.A patient came to me with hip pain recently. It isn’t such an unusual symptom and we can generally give our patients excellent pain release. The funny thing is that so many people point to different parts of their body and call it hip pain. Some people touch the side of their leg and complain while others will point to right in the middle of their buttock. Some patients will even indicate their complaint being on the side of their lower back and still call it hip pain.

Fortunately, we have been very successful treating “hip pain” in all of those areas of the body. For some patients, it is just a matter of working out a tight muscle that is causing the pain. For others, it can require more in the way of spinal adjustments to reduce the inflammation and irritation to the spinal nerves.

One patient from Cresskill, the next town over from Dumont where The Back Center is located, came in complaining of hip pain. At first we were able to give him some great relief. However, even after a month of treatment, his pain kept coming back almost every day. I was totally mystified by his results until he came in one day wearing a pair of jeans with the worn outline of his wallet in his back pocket.

I asked him about it and he told me that he usually carries his wallet back there but leaves it in the car when he comes into the office. He showed me the wallet and it turned out to be about 2 inches thick. We had him stop carrying it back there and he immediately began holding his adjustments and the pain gradually went away.

The moral of the story? If you are suffering from hip pain, of ANY type, give us a call today and let us help.

It’s Earache Season, And Antibiotics May Not Be The Best Choice

photo of little girl with an earache that can be treated without antibiotics at The Back Care Center

Every year around this time, parents tell me about their children who are suffering with earaches and swimmer’s ear. It is pretty understandable because, as the weather turns warmer, kids spend more time in pools and lakes with their heads underwater and ear problems are common.

Sometimes the outside of the ear might even turn a bit red, but the most common symptom is moderate to severe pain in and around the ear. Parents will quickly bring their child to the pediatrician, where the diagnosis is usually “ear infection” and the treatment is typically antibiotics.

Within two to three days the pain is gone and everyone figures that the treatment was a success. The sad truth is that kids who use antibiotics for this type of problem are more likely to develop ear infections again in the future. Which means they are constantly on and off of antibiotics.

For kids, chiropractic care is usually great at eliminating chronic earaches or swimmer’s ear. The adjustments are quick, safe and most importantly very effective. For this problem we usually focus on the upper back and neck. Those areas are closely involved in helping the Eustachian tubes to open, allowing better drainage of the inner ear.

One of the most dramatic cases was actually my own daughter. When she was about 5 or 6 years old, she came home from camp one day with a terrible earache. Her ear was bright red. When I got home from the office she was crying from the pain. I lay her down and started working on her, and in the middle of the adjustment she actually stopped crying and fell asleep. She woke up one time in the middle of the night and I adjusted her once more. By the next morning she had no pain, her ear wasn’t red and she said she felt fine. She is almost 12 and has only had one other episode of ear pain since then.

If your child is suffering from earaches or swimmer’s ear, make certain to have them checked out right away. Give us a call at 201-387-7463

Headaches are trending at The Back Care Center. So is headache relief.

headache-relief-at-the-back-care-center-of-dumont-nj

It always seems that problems come into the office in groups. For a while, a lot of people will call asking for help with lower back pain. Then it will switch to something like neck pain. Lately, it has been headaches. In the past month, we have had at least ten new patients all asking for relief from headache pain.

They all had different types; migraine, sinus headaches, tension headaches, even headaches due to whiplash injuries. The only thing that they had in common was that the pain was making them miserable and having terrible effects on their lives. One woman was in so much pain that even after seeing several doctors, having a full battery of tests including an MRI of her brain and finding nothing wrong, she was still convinced that she must have brain tumor. (By the way, she didn’t have a tumor and is doing fine.)

One particular man from Tenafly came in because his wife, who has been a patient of mine, insisted he get checked. After years of watching him suffer from frequent migraines, she couldn’t stand seeing him in pain any longer. He had been getting headaches since he was a kid but in recent years the frequency and severity had grown worse. Now he often missed work, or had to leave early because of the pain. When he was at home, it wasn’t uncommon to find him laying, eyes closed, in a darkened room with an icepack on his forehead. Every aspect of his life was being ruined.

It has only been a month since starting care, but in that time he has only had one headache and it wasn’t a migraine. After a couple of weeks, he still had a little bit of tension in the base of his neck, so I sent him to our massage therapist which made him feel even better. Now when he comes in, there is a smile on his face and he is happy to come to Dumont for his headache care.

If you or someone you know is suffering from headaches, don’t let them continue in pain. We provide headache relief for patients from Dumont and the surrounding area. Call us today at 201-387-7463
